Hello out there...!
My boyfriend and I are REALLY fed up with our jobs (have been for quite a while!) and were were wondering about the mobile catering business. We both have a bit of money saved up and have been thinking about driveable catering units (not trailers) , but, we still have a few questions to ask.
Would it be better to run a burger bar from a lay by on a motorway or from an industrial estate. Presumably you would have to get permission from whoever owns the land of the ind. est. but what about a lay by? Where would we go to ask permission and is there any way of checking that the lay by isn't already taken (apart from driving past it every day..) If we see a suitable lay by is there any way of kind of 'reserving' it to stop people moving in on it or is it just a first come first served basis?
How much (an estimate) is the road tax for a drivable burger bar (a box van with a serving hatch)?
Can you really make substantial money from selling burgers and hot dogs?! (and sandwiches, jacket potatoes and anything else we can think of, we'd like to have a healthy variety too!)
I have looked everywhere on the internet for information on this subject and have found some but it seems that one piece of information from one site will usuallly clash with another, so, if anyone has any first hand information and would like to share their knowledge with us we would be eternally gratefull !!
Any other info you can give us would also be FANTASTIC!!
Thank you very much!!

Phoyah,
I would of thought you would need permission from your loacl council if the land isnt privately owned. And if this isnt the case they will be able to give contact details.
Another thought, instead of a lay by or industrial estate, have you considered dedicated events. For example you could get contracts at boot sales, shopping centre car parks or any local event where there are people. The more people the better.
Hope this helps

HI Pohyah. I think i can help!!!
My name is Mike. Im an experienced mobile caterer and actually teach the subject too.
Ill try to answer all of your concerns. First off, industrial estate trading outweighs roadside trading 9 times out of 10 simply due to the fact that you can build ongoing relationships with local businesses and get alot more repeat custm than from you can from roadside trading, plus there are many other benefits which i wont go into now.
In terms of legalities, if you want to trade roadside you'll need a street trading licence which is paid for weekly and managed by the council that governs that area ie public roadside, city centre areas etc. With industrial estate trading if the area is not on governed areas such as the road itself, you need permission from the land owner.
You cant really reserve a spot when it comes to roadside trading its just an application proccess which can be difficult if your new however the ultimate resourse for all of this stuff can be found at this site

I have an entire curriculam on the subject of mobile catering which can be found at the above site. Hope this helps
To your catering success
