Advice on setting up a Training Centre/ Business
Hello, I’ve recently been thinking about setting up a Training Centre which offers both public and private courses. However, I am unsure how to go about it. i.e. whether I would be able to get funding, if so who to contact, how to set the business up (what type of business would it be i.e. charity etc), who to approach for help and advice. I have noticed some of you on the forum have their own training businesses and I would really appreciate any advice either online or offline or even a pointer in the right direction. Thanks so much in advance
What kind of training would you offer? Do you have specialities or skills?
For example, training people to hug trees is probably less lucrative than, say, SEO skills for small businesses.
Can you expand on what the idea is?
Thank you for responding. I am thinking of a training company that offers both public and private training courses i.e. Employability courses, Basic Skills, ESOL, Citizenship, Business & ICT. My background is in teaching and I have taught a variety of courses in the disciplines above. I’m also working for a private training organisation which looks at getting the unemployed back to work. I’m aware that they bid for goverment contracts to do this and I would like to do something similar…I’m just not sure how I would go about doing it all.
Difficult one because I’m sure there are lots of people doing the same thing. I’m guessing it may be beneficial to find out who offers these courses in your area and offer your services as a sub-contractor rather than as a stand-alone company?
From experience of working with coaches/consultants/trainers I know these council pitches or local government tenders are a nightmare to prepare and get – and a lot of the time the brief which the purchasing officer gives you is entirely different from what the end client actually wants!
My best advice was to get a list of organisations and pitch yourself to them.
If you read a couple of the adverts found at the link below (a list of training centre businesses for sale, mostly in the UK), they might give you a better idea as to the kind of competition that’s out there and how much of your revenue stream needs to come from Govt.:
The other option is to consider setting yourself up under the banner of a franchise – that way, you’ll get the support of a national company in terms of pitching for contracts etc., but you’d still be able to work at a regional level with your local authority. We’ve got a list of franchises here that might be worth approaching for more details – hope this helps:

Could you offer any advice on setting up a training course in this field ?
Hi everybody my name is Nigel I am from dear old England I just browsed this forum and I want to start a small English Culture training school Business there in the UK that will offer accommodation to Chinese students from over here in China …as its Big business here in China …I went to China 7 years ago and I have been here ever since, I have been teaching students and sending them over to England and other country’s as well …But I find the market now is changing and not only do the parents here in China want a good standard of Education for their children but also they want home stays where they can be placed and pick up the English culture from family’s…In saying that when I do open up a small Training school Business in the UK…an English Culture Training school …there will be great demand from this end here in China…So now the best way to go about this and the shortest route would be a bonus
…and no folks I am not into tree hugging not just yet anyway …Just serious Business as there is a lot of money involved in this area…its serious money ..I just need advice or even help where to look and what is involved in setting up a small company or business
All advice is appreciated no matter big or small
Thanks again people for you time
I am from China and now live in UK.
I was considering something similar and perhaps you can contact me to discuss further.
I recently came across your thread and like the person who originally enquired, I am equally as interested in setting up a training centre. I have my train-the-trainer qual and have spent 5 years in training in various disciplines such as Heath & Social Care, & Employability skills.
in the meantime i am looking at becoming a freelance Trainer to give me the flexibility to achieve my goal. However, having read your comments whilst it hasn’t deterred me it, it has left me somewhat skeptical as I really don’t wish to be a sub-contractor as I have seen many organisation fall foul to non payment or long payment delays.
I already know who offers this type of provision in my area but would really like to do it for myself as I feel that i have a much more proactive approach with a unique USP.
I am equally as inspired by the story which i found just last night, which makes me think that it must be possible http://www.startups.co.uk/freelance-training-and-consultancy.html
and if you look at the website it is now affiliated to some major accreditation as well as registered training provider with the SFA – Skills Funding Agency.
This would also be my ultimate aim, so could you please offer any advice on where i should start?
I am considering the same maybe you could contact me to explore further?
