Listing and Loading?
Hello Having had a few websites that have just taken my money and given nothing back, I am not the best believer in them for small business. But having traded on the Ebay and Amazon for some time, I am now getting fed up with there costs and considering having a new site made. My question is, can the site builder put in a program where I can list and load text and images myself just the same as Ebay/Amazon without me having to pay him everytime to do so? thanks
If your asking if you can manage your own items for sale etc with your own ecommerce site then the answer can be, absolutely.
When dealing with any supplier you need to specify what your requirements are but most developers will use an off the shelf ecommerce solution and then just tailor it to your needs and all of the ones I’ve seen allow a fairly simple process for adding/ amending/ removing products from the catalogue.

tigeress, it’s very easy to run an ecommerce websites, with a bit of technical knowhow you can have a website set up for free (minus the ~£50 p.a. hosting and domain cost)
You can use an open source [free] shopping cart like zencart, oscommerce or opencart, you can manage inventory from the back end administration panel and once set up should be as easy or even easier than ebay.
Once you have the website you need to spend money getting in customers, the most cost eeffective method for a shopping site is through adwords.
I keep hearing scare stories from friends who spend £500 to £1000 on website design, and were left with a static website with no visitors and no customers. They were mis-sold the service, which included "search engine optimisation features". Which don’t work unless you have backlinks to the site to begin with.
These days you can have shopping carts for free, the cost should be invested in the traffic.

Thanks Ast and total
Great reading and opened my eyes. If I told you I spent £3000 on 2 sites that sold a total of 3 dvds altogether you would understand why I am not impressed with websites. And before anyone asks, they were both by totally different web designers and the 3 sales were off the second one.
I nearly forgot to ask one important question and that is can a site be linked to your Ebay or Amazon shop?
That sounds like you’ve had terrible luck.
They say the best things in life are free and with software and web technologies this is often the case.
A good open source system which is new and has lots of help availble is Concrete 5, Im currently recommending to to all my clients. I havent used it for ecommerce personally but I know a lot of people use if for that very successfully.

I’d go with an easy-to-use CMS that’s SEO friendly and supports eCommerce.
If your ticket price is high enough you can do really good things online quite easily, as it doesn’t matter what the cost of your sales is.
However low-ticket price items can be much tougher, as credit card surcharges, CPC, etc can be prohibitive.
Depending on your business history, you may want to decide between using PayPal/Google Checkout, A Payment Service Provider like PayPoint.net or SagePay, or going for a proper Internet Merchant Account.
These options get respectively much harder to comply with, however the advantage with the PSP/IMA is that you have lower per-transaction fees.
Hope this helps.
