Inventor of innovative pill dispenser wins Orange Different Business competition

Lorna Lou, the pill dispenser company founded by cancer survivor Lorna Perks, has won first prize in the inaugural Orange Different Business Competition.

The live pitch of Pillpod, the electronic dispenser that reminds patients to take their medication on time, impressed judges including former chairman of the Medical Journalists Association, John Illman.

As a result Perks will now receive £200,000 worth of business, marketing and legal advice from Kingston Smith, Publics Chemistry and Lewis Silkin.

The Orange Different Business competition was launched in March 2012, attracting applications from nearly 150 small businesses and individuals.

At the final pitch in London, Lorna Lou beat competition from biotech company, ABeterno Ltd and online charity fundraiser (and former Just Started), Guess2Give, and Perks feels that the prize will greatly assist her company’s growth:

“Winning the competition is such a huge opportunity for me and my business and I’m thrilled to have been selected by Orange as the winner of its Different Business Competition.

“One of the most daunting things about starting out as a new company is not knowing who you can turn to if you need advice, and that’s what’s so great about this competition – it will not only give me the kit I need to succeed, but also the skills and knowledge.”
