Specsavers co-founder Dame Mary Perkins on being a private company [Video]

Dame Mary Perkins says that “One of the reasons that a lot of these directors joined” Specsaver “in 1991… was in fact they’d come from big public companies” and “liked the idea of working for a family owned business and to have the complete freedom… to do their own thing”.

She explains that working for a public company has restricions: “you’re working for the shareholders and all the time… You can’t suddenly decide to do something or hold back on an expansion or whatever it happens to be”.

The culture of a family-owned business “gives you a lot more freedom and you can discuss… things quite openly and make decisions” that aren’t dictated solely by commerce.
