University Cribs becomes first recruit of Jim Duffy’s Moonshot Academy accelerator
Startups 100-featured company will receive guidance from “the greatest entrepreneurial minds” to help them achieve the next stage of growth
Startups 100-featured University Cribs, the student accommodation search engine, has been announced as the first member of Moonshot Academy; a new accelerator that was announced in July and is seeking to help growing businesses “optimally apply” their funding.
Founded by Jack Jenkins, Daniel Jefferys, and Christian Samuel in 2014, Cardiff-based University Cribs acts as a one stop shop for student accommodation, featuring well-known letting agents and hall providers in all the UK’s major university towns.
Today, over 300,000 students use the platform every month to search through a list of more than 40,000 properties.
Entrepreneurial Spark’s Jim Duffy MBE, Angels Den’s Bill Morrow, and Al Walker – co-founder of Siembra Coworking – started Moonshot to offer promising start ups “guidance from the greatest entrepreneurial minds in the world”.
It has raised over £200m and plans to select 50 high growth start-ups over the next five years to partner with until they exit, helping businesses to scale-up, build a company culture and build a team.
Watch Jack Jenkins and Christian Samuel from University Cribs explain how being featured in the Startups 100 benefitted their business.
In July, University Cribs was amongst 12 Welsh start-ups selected to join the country’s first technology accelerator The Digital Dozen; a six-month programme of mentoring, pitch training and networking events aimed at helping its participants secure their next investment round.
Jefferys said: “We have enjoyed great success since our inception two years ago but like so many successful start-ups, we are facing challenges when it comes to scaling up and securing investment. The experience behind Moonshot Academy is second to none and we are delighted to secure a place on the academy.
“With Moonshot Academy’s guidance and our 30+ years expertise in student marketing, we are well placed for future success and are ready to create something special. Watch this space!”
Morrow added: “Jefferys and his team are exactly what we are looking for in a partner. Our unique partner for life approach means we are in this for the long term and we want to work with high-potential, hardworking start-ups that are ready to take the next step but need guidance on how to get there.”
