Very simply, what does your tech start-up do?

GetAgent is an estate agent comparison website. We use historical sales data to help homeowners find the best estate agent for their home and maximise the sale value of the property.

Tell us why there’s a need – what do you disrupt?

A person’s home is invariably their largest financial asset. Choosing an estate agent to sell that home is an important decision, but with more than 20,000 estate agents in the UK – and with most of them saying the same thing – it is almost impossible for homeowners to know which one to choose.

Choosing the wrong estate agent could cost the homeowner tens of thousands of pounds in lost property value. It could also make the process longer and be more painful than necessary, or the homeowner could simply be left with a property not sold!

We pull together a number of data sources to create a transparent and accurate indicator of an estate agent’s performance. We look at the number of properties they’ve sold, the time they take to sell and the percentage of the asking price achieved.

This benefits both owners and agents: owners can feel confident in the knowledge that they’ve chosen the right estate agent, and the better-performing agents are rewarded – not necessarily the ones that spend the most on marketing. We believe it creates a fairer and better market.

Is GetAgent funded?

We raised a small SEIS round back in September 2015 from investors including Seedcamp and Ascension Ventures. Last year we also took investment from 500 Startups and joined their Distro Dojo program which was great.

What were you doing before you started GetAgent?

My background (Short) has always been in sales and sales training. I led the sales operations in Scandinavia for the world’s largest sports hospitality brand, SMG Worldwide, and I trained sales people in their 52 offices around the world. I thought that dealing with the CEOs of huge companies all day wasn’t hard enough, so decided to try selling to estate agents all day instead!

Meanwhile, Thum-Bonanno ran a property portal called FindProperly, which he later sold to property search company Nestoria, and Powell worked as head of design at ad-tech start-up Adbrain.

What’s the best thing about being based in London?

We are based in Farringdon. The best thing about our location is being near other start-ups, start-up events and our investors. The best thing about our office is the free sweets and chocolate!
