Trio leave careers to start Tutor Doctor businesses empowering young people

Lisa Maclean, Shantanu Gupta and Jonathan Parks are the newest franchisees to join Tutor Doctor. Could it be the business opportunity for you?

Proof that you can go into franchising no matter what your background, home-tutoring franchise Tutor Doctor has announced the latest budding entrepreneurs to join its chain and they include a former nurse, IT management consultant, and a learning mentor.

The trio will now launch operations in Milton Keynes, North West London, and Southampton, becoming part of Tutor Doctor’s global network which boasts over 500 franchisees and counting.

Lisa Maclean, a qualified adult and mental health nurse and former NHS director of nursing for Buckinghamshire, decided to pursue franchising as it “aligned to her personal values and aspirations in life”.

Maclean, whose son is dyslexic, admits to facing difficulties in securing the right academic support and says she now wants to “ensure others don’t face similar challenges”.

A former IT services executive for global corporations such as IBM and PWC, Shantanu Gupta also decided to launch a franchise career on the back of his passions:

“The drive to do something of my own and be in control of my own destiny had been with me for a few years but I knew that going it alone was fraught with risk! I discovered franchising at the London Business School and focussed my due diligence on the education sector. I knew that’s where I wanted to be both from personal interest and the fact that I saw education as a ‘recession proof’ industry”.

Lastly, Jonathan Parks – a former head teacher and ex-learning mentor at the University of Southampton – has joined the chain and will now run operations in the Southampton area, supported by his daughter Jessica.

For Parks, it was Tutor Doctor’s approach and USP which made it stand out as the franchise opportunity for him: “What attracted me to Tutor Doctor was the professionalism, the great systems for tutors and lessons and the support that everyone in the process gets, not just the student.”

Started in 2000, Tutor Doctor claims to be the UK’s fastest growing home-tutoring franchise and is tapping into the country’s booming private tuition market which is estimated to be worth £6bn.

It has franchise packages available for an average cost of £29,700 and will consider franchise applications from ambitious individuals from a variety of backgrounds.

UK country manager, Tim Morris, has explained that 80% of Tutor’s Doctors franchisees don’t come from a teaching background but are extremely passionate about improving the education system:

“The desire to make a difference in children’s lives whilst building a successful business is what drives our franchisees. By being great communicators and motivated professionals, franchisees can take our meticulously refined systems and processes and, along with our support and guidance, to create exceptional businesses.”

Morris added:

“We couldn’t be more proud of our network and those who look to Tutor Doctor for their future, be they customers or franchisees, will continue to benefit from our strength and commitment to be the very best.”
