Why professional business cards are important for effective networking

What you should include and how to use them to your advantage

When attending networking events, be sure to take with you a good supply of professional-looking business cards. It is paramount that these are of high quality, because it should reflect your business’ ethos, therefore it’s worthwhile investing both time and money in getting some cards printed professionally. From an outsiders’ point of view, if you don’t invest in your business card, you’re hardly likely to invest in your business itself.

There are certain things that must be included on a business card. These include: name, company, job title, contact details (telephone and email) and website. However, you might decide to include extra details, such as your company’s logo and slogan, a brief business description, your picture and any Twitter / Facebook contact details. It’s up to you how much or how little you include on the card but it should always reflect the character of your business

Bev James, who co-founded the Entrepreneurs’ Business Academy with James Caan, suggests putting your photo on your business card as this can help people remember who you are. Although, it’s important that you get a professional photo taken to ensure it’s of high quality and doesn’t look tacky. It is better to have no picture than a bad picture.

Business cards should, however be handed out with care, not just to anybody you meet or at any opportunity you get. If the moment isn’t right, make a note of a person’s name and what their company is called, then you can get in touch later via email if you want to make contact with them. There is nothing worse than being too pushy and forcing your card into people’s hands without properly introducing yourself – it will do you no favours. However, it’s important to strike the right balance, because you want to get the most out of networking events by meeting as many people as possible that might be useful to your business.
