TransferWise named Best Middleweight Startup at The Europas

2012 Young Guns Taavet Hinrikus and Kristo Käärmann recognised at European tech awards

International money transfer service TransferWise, which was founded by 2012 Young Guns Taavet Hinrikus and Kristo Käärmann, has won the Best Middleweight Startup award at The Europas.

Recognised as the best European tech company aged under three years, TransferWise beat stiff competition from fellow Young Guns’ firm Swiftkey.

The mobile keyboard app developed by Dr Ben Medlock and Jon Reynolds was named as the runner-up in the same category.

The ceremony, which was hosted in Berlin also saw 2012 Startups 100 winner GoCardless take the award for Best UK Startup.

The firms are among 32 start-up companies to be recognised at the fourth annual European awards, which has previously awarded titles to some of the UK technology scene’s leading lights, including digital music service Spotify and entertainment firm Mind Candy, the company behind Moshi Monsters started by 2003 Young Gun Michael Acton Smith.

Hinrikus commented: “This is such an honour, particularly when the competition was so great.

“It just goes to show that people are really fed up of banks taking more than their fair share.”
