10 digital start-up trends to watch

What key trends are shaping the digital start-up scene this year?

Earlier this month, I took part in a panel discussion at NACUE’s Startup Career Launchpad, at Google’s new start-up campus in Tech City. Along with Joe Cohen, founder of ticket resale platform Seatwave; Stefan Glaenzer, a top angel investor and founder of Passion Capital; and Tim Hames, head of public affairs, communications and campaigns at the British Venture Capital Association (BVCA), we discussed some of the top trends we’ve spotted among the start-ups launching or gaining traction this year, and where we see the key opportunities for entrepreneurs.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, most of the trends identified were in the blossoming digital and mobile sectors, fuelled by the lowering cost of technology and barriers to entry involved with starting an online business (making data capture and storage more and more feasible and affordable for start-ups).

So here’s a look at the top 10 digital start-up trends to look out for this year, along with some examples of recent start-ups that are illustrating these concepts – with impressive results.

Will you be employing any of these ideas in your own start-up this year? Or, are there any other key trends you’ve noticed emerging or gaining momentum in 2012, either in the digital space or elsewhere? Let us know in the comment box below.
