£3m funding pot announced for environmentally-friendly UK start-ups

Chance for three early-stage low carbon businesses to join Berti Green Accelerator and secure £1m deal

Environmental impact company Berti Investments has opened applications for the second year of its investment and support programme, the Berti Green Accelerator, offering three cleantech businesses the chance to win a share of a £3m funding pool.

The programme seeks to support start-ups and organisations that have a focus on carbon reduction techniques with the goal to ‘deliver a shared vision of creating a long term-positive impact on the environment’.

The three winning companies will each be granted access to £1m finance and a 12-month mentoring scheme from sponsor partners, global investment firm Coller Capital.

Selected finalists will present their “sustainable” business models in a ‘Dragons’ Den’ style pitch to a panel of leading entrepreneurs and investors including Coller Capital founder and CIO Jeremy Coller, founder of Solar Century, Jeremy Leggett, Jacques Tredoux, founder and director of Berti Investments and Ben Goldsmith, founder and executive director of WHEB group.

Businesses looking to apply must be UK-based with a minimum team of two people, have been generating revenue for at least six months prior to the application deadline and possess annual revenues of less than £5m.

Berti is looking to build on last year’s success which saw it receive more than 80 entries from businesses across a range of industries including online conferencing, community solar initiatives and large-scale renewables.

One of last year’s winning companies, Firefly Solar, which specialises in solar energy solutions, used the programme to develop its offering and transition from the start-phase.

Firefly founder and CEO Andy Mead commented:

“With the economic crisis making it difficult for small businesses to access funds, the Berti Green Accelerator Programme has filled the much needed gap for British cleantech small and medium-sized enterprises.”

Finalist judge Ben Goldsmith added: “The programme gives three cutting edge young businesses a transformational boost.

“This kind of support, at a crucial moment in the development of a young business, the so-called valley of death, can make the difference between lift-off and failure.”

Applications for the Berti Green Accelerator close on November 7 2013, to apply click here.
