72% of female micro-business owners say entrepreneurship boosts family life

Taking control of their lives (48%) cited as top reason for starting a business, followed by passion (43%) and making money (33%)

72% of the UK’s female micro-business claim that entrepreneurship has had a positive impact on family life, according to new research from Vistaprint’s Women-owned Micro Businesses Trend Report.

48% of UK respondents cited the freedom to take control of their own lives and decide how and when to fit work in around other commitments as the top reason for starting their own business, with following a passion (43%) and making money (33%) the next most popular.

62% of female entrepreneurs in the UK expect their businesses to do better in 2016, with around 60% expecting to grow their business over the next five years.

44% claimed that he income generated from their micro-business was enough to support themselves financially, with around 20% saying they have a second job for supplementary income.

Conducted on 1,200 professionals in the UK and US, the study found that achieving a good work-life balance was the biggest challenge faced by female entrepreneurs globally at 62%, followed by limited access to funding (50%) and gender discrimination (35%).

However, 59% of UK female respondents believed that women currently have the same, or more, opportunities as men to be successful at running a micro-business, while 63% thought they have more opportunities to become entrepreneurs today than women of prior generations.

In the UK, nearly 1.5 million women are self-employed and between 2008 and 2011, accounted for 80% of newly self-employed individuals within the country.
