App of the month: Dragon NaturallySpeaking Premium v11

Could you live without a keyboard?

There’s a whole suite of new voice recognition tools available from Dragon – on PC, Mac and iPhone – and as a challenge we decided to live without a keyboard for a week.

The first thing you need to do with the software is train it to your voice. It takes about 20 minutes and it’s relatively pain-free. After that you just dictate away and the Dragon software does the rest for you. There were a few times when we had to resort to a keyboard, but most of the time it worked well and it got better the more we used it.

The high points and the low points of the trial came from the iPhone Dragon Dictation app, which seemed to be even better at translation than the PC product – and it’s free – but, it would also lose your dictated words if you lost your mobile signal, so you’d need to say the words again.  We are now a convert to voice recognition.

RRP: free on iPhone, £149.99 for PC/Mac
