Tell us what your business does:
The Baby Fame Game is the real game of life. Any parent who has a child under the age of five can enter them into the Baby Fame Game and start them in the race to become a star. The rules are very simple, the first baby to complete any of the listed ambitions below wins the game and collects the Baby Fame Game Jackpot.
- Become king or queen
- Become a world leader
- Walk on another planet or moon
- Win a gold medal at the olympics
- Win an oscar
- Have a number one solo album
- Become a sports hero
- Win a grammy
- Win a nobel prize
- Reach the age of 100
Entry costs £5 and each baby will receive a personalised certificate to hang on their wall. Keep an eye on the jackpot though as it will grow bigger and bigger with each new baby entered!
Where did the idea for your business come from?
Having recently become a dad to a lovely baby boy, I started day-dreaming about what he might choose to do with his life. Like a lot of dads before me, I ventured into a bookmakers to place a bet.
I am a keen golfer so I thought it would be funny to see what odds I could get on my son winning a golf major before he was 30.
I was flabbergasted when they offered me a paltry 500/1! Surely the odds are higher than that? That’s when the idea popped into my head. Instead of placing a ‘bet’, what if it became a race? Against lots of other babies. And not just for golf fame, but a range of life achievements.
How did you know there was a market for it?
Being a father made me my own target market, and I am always looking for the next novelty gift. The Baby Fame Game offers parents, relatives and friends a unique and engaging gift for a young loved one – whilst also giving them the chance to win big later in life!
What were you doing before starting up?
I have been a marketer in various industries over the last eight years.
Have you always wanted to run your own business?
Yes always. I had that feeling that I would never be content until I was my own boss, doing things my way. It is exciting as it is scary but ultimately feels like it’s what I should be doing.
How did you raise the money?
So far the whole project has been bootstrapped by myself.
Describe your business model and how you make money:
The business model begins and starts with the website and entries into the game.
What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?
Taking the spark of an idea, and see how I could make it become a reality with the resources that were available to me. I think the key for me is to always listen. Listen to your family, your friends and customers.
Even if you disagree, an opinion is formed for a reason and you should take information from that as it is more than likely that somebody else will share that opinion.
What was your first big breakthrough?
Getting the first entry into the game. That really proved to me that people share my feelings of the fun and novelty value that the game brings.
What advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
Don’t wait. Just do it.
Where do you want to be in five years’ time?
I would like to think we will have a healthy amount of baby players in the Baby Fame Game, and starting to see some of them shine.
