Balderton Capital appoints Amazon’s Gilles Stephan as talent director
Amazon's former tech recruitment lead has joined the VC firm to front "strategic approach" to hiring
London-based venture capital (VC) firm Balderton Capital has appointed Gilles Stephan, the former tech recruitment lead for Amazon, as its new talent director.
Stephan will be in charge of the companies talent team and his responsibilities will include generating candidates, raising employer branding, developing internal talent and using events to nurture a talent focused community.
At Amazon, Stephan spent two years as European talent acquisition director followed by a position as “head of next generation leaders”. He oversaw hiring, opened new fulfillment sites in Eastern Europe, and established major new initiatives in the UK and Germany.
Founded in 2000, Balderton Capital primarily invests in technology and internet start-ups and recently relocated its offices to Kings Cross.
It’s addition of a talent director reflects the growing challenge for fast-growth companies to find, attract and hire staff – a topic which will be discussed at the upcoming Scaleups Session, with recent studies having highlighted concerns over a “skills shortage”.
Stephan commented: “We are creating an environment for our portfolio companies to receive the comprehensive support they need to build a perfect team. If a company succeeds, usually a lot of that success is because of their unique skills, capabilities and passion. Having the right talent in your team is the cornerstone of that.”
Bernard Liautaud, general partner at Balderton Capital, said:

“Managing talent is one of the most important things that a growing business needs to master, as an effective and well-motivated team can be the difference between success and failure. Stephan brings a wealth of relevant experience to the table, and we look forward to watching our talent department grow with him at the helm.”
