Balderton typically backs early-stage and Series A funding rounds, although it does occasionally invest in later-stage rounds. It has invested in more than 100 businesses to date in a cross-sector of industries across Europe, the US and Asia, with investment rounds ranging from $100,000 to $20m. With an eye on the long term “never the quick flip”, its initial investment size tends to be around $5m with $15m invested over the lifecycle of a company. It tends to back high-growth tech businesses and has invested in a number of communications, security, media and financial businesses, but does not invest in life sciences or cleantech. It has had 12 exits and three IPOs: Yoox Group, Realtime Technology and InnerWorkings.

Carwow, an early-stage car comparison platform, has taken investment to over £5.9m in two rounds which were led by Balderton Capital. In December 2014, Balderton led a £4.6m Series A deal in the company following a £1.3m seed raise in February of the same year. A People’s Champion Finalist in the Startups Awards 2014, Balderton said it invested in Carwow with the vision that it will become the “default option” for car buyers.
