Barclays offers £500,000 for best business ideas

Online dragon Julie Meyer joins panel of judges for new start-up competition

Ten of Britain’s best business ideas will share a prize fund of £500,000 in a new competition launched by Barclays.

The Take One Small Step campaign was launched today by Julie Meyer, online Dragons’ Den investor and chief executive of Ariadne Capital.

The competition is open to both start-ups and established businesses. A shortlist of 30 will be drawn up – three each from 10 different regions – and winners will then be judged by a public vote.

Each of the 10 winners will receive £50,000 for their business as well as a year’s worth of business support and advice.

“The UK is now the world’s breeding ground of the brightest and most inventive business ideas and the last 12 months has in many cases steeled people’s determination to make a success of a new venture,” said Meyer.   “I have seen time and again how a good idea with the right support can change lives, not just of those that initially developed it but the people involved in its continued growth and success.”
