Tell us what your business does:
Blue Cliff Media is a social media marketing agency. We help businesses of all shapes and sizes with their social media and digital marketing. Whether that’s training sessions or management of their accounts, we’ve got it covered.
Where did the idea for your business come from?
I have always been an avid user of social media and I found out that many businesses owners simply don’t have the time for social media, or just don’t know where to get started. So I thought, why not teach them how to do it?
How did you know there was a market for it?
It’s quite easy to see that social media is a growing market. Facebook recently announced that 1 billion users used Facebook in one day! Businesses now need to be using social media to market their business.
What were you doing before starting up?
Before launching Blue Cliff Media, I ran a corporate wellbeing company. However, it never really took off the way I wanted it to, so I decided to cut my losses and launch Blue Cliff Media. Before that I studied at The Peter Jones Enterprise Academy.
Have you always wanted to run your own business?
I have! Unfortunately, I don’t have any “selling sweets in the playground” stories but I’ve always been committed to launching my own business.
How did you raise the money?
I’m lucky in that my business has very little overheads. I was also able to get my initial clients to pay upfront, meaning I had cash in the bank instantly.
Describe your business model and how you make money:
We charge our clients on a month-to-month basis. For the social media management side of the business, we charge per platform, per month.
What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?
I was able to get a good number of initial clients on board at the beginning. However, the hardest thing for me was trying to manage my time whilst working with clients and still trying to grow the business.
I took time off from marketing the business and focussed solely on ensuring I did a good job for my clients. That gave me the chance to systemise how I did my work backend.
What was your first big breakthrough?
My biggest breakthrough was when my largest client agreed to work with us. It really allowed me to take the business to the next step. They also agreed to pay me up front which really helped me with cashflow.
What advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
Get out there. Go to as many networking events as you can, speak to as many people as you can and connect with as many people online as you can. Give them value and they’ll naturally reciprocate.
Where do you want to be in five years’ time?
I want to grow Blue Cliff Media into the biggest social media/digital marketing agency in Edinburgh and hopefully Scotland.
