Boutique gym start-up 1Rebel raises £1.5m via Crowdcube

304 investors back equity crowdfunding pitch to support impending Shoreditch launch

New fitness venture 1Rebel has secured an impressive £1,559,370 in an oversubscribed pitch on equity crowdfunding platform Crowdcube.

Having exceeded its original £1.15m target within 11 days from its pitch going live, the early-stage gym venture dubbed the “future of fitness” went on to attract a total of 304 crowd investors in return for a 34.03% equity stake.

Founded by James Balfour and Giles Dean; the team behind Fitness First and Jatomi Fitness, London-based 1Rebel intends to offer a chain of contract-free ‘high-intensity’ boutique gyms which will enable members to book classes online and via an app on a pay-as-you-go basis, with its first gym opening planned for later this year in Shoreditch.

The deal marks another successful funding round for Crowdcube which has now facilitated over £37m in 143 UK start-ups since its launch in 2011.
