Chance for 12 ambitious start-ups to launch their business in Hong Kong

2013 StartmeupHK venture programme offers early-stage companies opportunity to expand internationally

Business advisory and support service Invest Hong Kong (Invest HK), backed by the Hong Kong government, has opened applications for this year’s StartmeupHK scheme offering 12 entrepreneurs the chance to travel to Hong Kong to grow their early stage businesses.

The competition, which is open to applicants from across the world, will provide successful finalists with the opportunity to pitch to potential investors and get advice and support on how to set up in Asia’s business capital.

InvestHK are looking for early stage start-ups, profit or non-profit, that run an exciting, scalable and sustainable business and which aim to develop globally in Hong Kong over the next few years.

Preference will also be given to ventures that show positive economic, social or environmental impact.

A panel of judges, which includes experienced angel investors and venture capitalists, will shortlist businesses with the highest potential and conduct interviews to decide the lucky 12. Finalists will then attend the event in Hong Kong on December 5.

The programme forms part of the business growth firm’s goal to support companies that want to establish a base in Hong Kong by providing a range of services including reviews of visa applications and help with marketing strategies.

Simon Galpin, director general of investment promotion at InvestHK, commented on the benefits the venture programme has brought to British entrepreneurs:

Building a website for your business idea is easier than you might think. Our online tool ranks the top website builders that offer free trials.

“These businesses may start small and employ only a few people in the beginning but they also create jobs through outsourcing some of their activities to local service providers. In fact, some of these businesses grow very quickly, employing 50 or more people within one to two years.

“And just as, if not more important, are the innovative business ideas and skills they bring to Hong Kong, which lend further competitive advantage to our economy in the long run.”
