A quick word with a bank offering some old-fashioned service and advice
Who are you?
John Carr, senior partner of Clydesdale Bank.
What do you do?
We provide an old style of banking that no longer exists elsewhere. We have bank managers who actually make decisions. We don’t have products; everything is tailor-made to the individual. Our mission is to be more than just a bank, to connect people, create partnerships and deliver value.
Why should I care?
Our managers are all experienced bankers who understand what makes businesses work and will give you oneon- one attention. We’ve also got a range of contacts we can direct you to. We prefer to think of banking with Clydesdale as being in a club; our bankers are partners and our clients are members. We’re rapidly expanding in the South East and will be opening 30 more branches in the next 12 to 18 months to boost our UK presence (Yorkshire Bank is our sister company in the North).
Why should I trust you?
Because we’ll listen and judge each case on its merits.
What problem do you think i have that you can solve?
We can make human decisions on lending. Nine out of 10 decisions on lending are made by managers on the back of our in-house credit team. ‘Computer says no’ doesn’t exist with us.
What do you think annoys me?
Poor contact and lack of understanding from people who don’t care about your individual needs.
How well do you really know your market? describe me in three words
Passionate, committed, focused.
Give me an example of a company like mine that you’ve helped.
An entrepreneur in his mid-20s came to me with an idea he had for flatpack containers for campers. I could see it was a good idea but he didn’t even have a business plan. We went through the whole process with him and helped him with his marketing. The turnover for the business for the first year was £500,000.
Which entrepreneur do you respect most?
Richard Branson. He’s not afraid to ask for help – an essential attribute.
What’s your best piece of advice?
Always be prepared.
Whats your poison?
Whats on your radio?
What was your last co/book/film?
Maroon 5 / The Da Vinci Code / The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
