Contact lens retailer GetLenses acquires Dutch competitors Vision Direct and Lensbase to strengthen European position

Netherland purchase first of many planned acquisitions for UK lenses firm

Leading UK online contact lens supplier GetLenses has announced that it has acquired Dutch retailers Vision Direct and Lensbase for an undisclosed amount.

Founded in 2002, York-based GetLenses claims to be the largest online contact lens supplier in Britain offering next day delivery on over one million prescription contact lenses from leading brands such as Focus Dailies, Air Optix, and Acuvue Moist.

It also offers a “unique” service; allowing customers to check their prescriptions before they buy.

Its purchase of Vision Direct and Lensbase, which were established in 1998 and sell contact lenses, lens solutions and glasses to consumers in the Netherlands, Spain and US, is expected to generate revenues of over €30m by year-end 2014.

Michael Kraftman, CEO at GetLenses, commented: “This cements our position as a market leader in Europe, significantly increases our customer base and enhances our ability to deliver a fantastic service to all our customers.

“We expect to complement this with further acquisitive growth in other European markets.”
