Crowdfunding success stories: Seedrs

The prominent UK crowdfunding platform which raised a world record £2.5m through its own site…

Given the incredible rise and rise of crowdfunding, it’s rather apt that London-based equity crowdfunding platform Seedrs is at the top of our list.

Having secured £2,583,420 investment through its own platform in January to fund “aggressive” expansion plans, the crowdfunding start-up currently holds the title of the largest funding amount ever raised through an equity crowdfunding site.

Seedrs secured the world-record sum in just over a month of its campaign going live and hit its original £750,000 target in just a few hours, attracting 909 investors overall for a combined equity share of 33% in the business.

Founded in July 2012 and featured in the Startups 100 2013, Seedrs aims to support early-stage and pre-revenue start-ups to secure investment by addressing the funding gap often experienced by new businesses.

In the last few months the site has opened its platform to overseas investors and prospective companies, and at last count had facilitated over £6m in 60 businesses.

Speaking in January, Seedrs co-founder Jeff Lynn, commented: “We were completely overwhelmed by the support our campaign received.

“For most entrepreneurs, raising £2m is a long, painful process. Using our own platform we’ve shown how start-ups can harness their customers’ enthusiasm to raise money quickly and efficiently.”
