Decorators business sells after 150 years of trading

One of the Midland’s oldest family companies has been sold by its fifth generation owner.


SJ Dixon & Sons, a leading decorators merchant, which was founded over 150-years-ago by Joseph Dixon, has been bought by ICI Paints, which owns the Dulux Decorator Centres brand.

The exact details of the deal have not been made public as the deal is of a level where it does not have to made public to the London stock exchange where ICI is listed.

The Midlands-based company, which has 22 outlets, will continue to operate under its own name and will continue to concentrate on its core business of wall coverings and accessories.

Brian Dixon, chairman of the business, said: “We are delighted to have struck a deal with ICI Dulux Decorator Centres. “We believe that the change of ownership will provide a secure future for the business and our staff.”

The acquisition of the Dixon’s stores increases Dulux Decorator Centres’ national coverage to 190 outlets.

Guy Williams, general manager of ICI Dulux Decorator Centres, said: “This acquisition illustrates our commitment to expanding our network of ICI Dulux Decorator Centres to meet the ever more demanding needs of our customers.”
