Demand for office space in North of England on the up

Rise of the 'Northern Powerhouse'? More businesses searching for offices in Northern cities such as Liverpool and Sheffield than in London

Business owners are increasingly looking for office space in ‘Northern Powerhouse’ cities, with searches for commercial properties across Liverpool, Sheffield, Leeds, Newcastle and Manchester up by 56% on average last quarter when compared to 2015.

According to data from OfficeGenie, this is a marked increase on average office searches for London which saw a 21% rise across January to March 2016 on last year.

The research indicated that entrepreneurs are increasingly looking to locate in Liverpool with office searches up 90% on 2015, followed by a 78% increase for Leeds, 54% for Newcastle, and 29% for Manchester.

OfficeGenie’s head of strategy, Peter Ames, said the data proved “the North of England has been, and will continue to be, a hotbed of business activity in the UK, as it was long before the Northern Powerhouse was imagined.”

Liverpool, Sheffield, Leeds, Newcastle, and Manchester all feature in the Startups Cities Index: The UK’s top 25 cities to start a business.
