Digital health start-up Thriva secures £1.5m to roll-out domestic blood tests

Thriva, a start-up which sends domestic blood tests to consumers to monitor their health, has closed a £1.5m seed funding round.

The round attracted involvement from a number of high-profile angel investors including Zoopla founder and former CEO Alex Chesterman, TransferWise co-founder Taavet Hinrikus, and LOVEFiLM co-founder Simon Franks.

Early stage venture funds Seedcamp, the London Co-Investment Fund (LCIF), and 500 Startups also participated in the round.

Launched in August 2016 by Hamish Grierson, Tom Livesy and Eliot Brooks, London-based Thriva’s subscription service seeks to “make tracking the true state of your internal health as easy as counting steps or jumping on the scales”.

It has developed a simple finger-prick blood test – Baseline – that can be done at home (pictured below) and provides results within two days on a personal online dashboard along with GP recommendations on how best to act on the results.

The quarterly test monitors and tracks cholesterol levels, Vitamin-D deficiency, iron deficiency and poor liver function.

Its founders claim the solution can be used to monitor for health issues, or merely to help people reach their peak levels of fitness.

The start-up intends to use the seven-figure investment to expand its product range and claims that it will soon be able to analyse a range of health markers such as gut health and hormone levels.

CEO and co-founder Grierson commented:

“In five years time we’ll look back and think it’s ludicrous how little most people knew about what was really happening inside their bodies.

“We’re motivated by a simple view: That the world would be a better place if more people felt it was okay to know their bodies. Your blood can tell an amazing story about your health.”

On his decision to invest, Alex Chesterman added: “We’ve been impressed with Thriva’s rapid growth in the first 12 months and the high customer uptake of subscriptions to Thriva’s Baseline tracking product.

“We are excited to be supporting Thriva and the vision the team has of taking health tracking to the next level and putting proactive health within the reach of everyone.”
