Digital Theatre receives £750,000 investment from Ingenious Ventures

Live performance filming company supplied with funding through investment firm’s media fund

Digital Theatre, a London-based company that films live theatrical productions, has secured an investment of £750,000 from Ingenious Ventures.

Launched in 2009, Digital Theatre uses multiple camera angles and high-definition technology to produce videos of live performances that can be downloaded or streamed online.

Having filmed 14 productions to date, the firm which has partnered with theatre companies including the Almeida Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company to film actors including David Tennant (pictured above with actress and comedienne Catherine Tate in a production of Much Ado About Nothing) and Zoë Wanamaker, is hoping to benefit from overseas opportunities, including the sale of franchises and international screenings.

Funding for the company, which makes money through selling online rentals and downloads, as well as providing subscription access to schools and universities, was supplied through Ingenious Ventures’ specific media investment arm, the Media Opportunities Fund.

The deal follows a £250,000 private investment into Digital Theatre made by Ingenious’ chief executive Patrick McKenna, who joins the company’s board.

He commented: “As well as being an exciting commercial investment, this is a cultural investment. Digital Theatre is in the business of distributing – and exporting – a thriving aspect of Britain’s creative industries to as broad an audience as possible.”
