Data visualisation firm Flourish secures $1m seed investment

After launch this month, funding will be used to help more companies and organisations visualise data alongside Google, Fannie Mae and the BBC

Flourish, a data visualisation platform, has raised $1m in seed funding from LocalGlobe and Founder Collective.

Launched this month by Duncan Clark and Robin Houston, Flourish is a platform that enables companies to use tools that create visuals and stories to understand and explain data.

Developers can use Flourish SDK to make visualisation templates, which can be used to create and publish charts, maps, globes, animated stories, interactive content and presentations.

Flourish started life in the Founders Factory accelerator in March last year and is now used by customers such as Google, Fannie Mae, the BBC and JLL.

The funding will be used to push the company’s technology out to more companies, governments and other organisations

Clark commented: “Organisations today are drowning in data. The answer is not to create ever more reports and dashboard full of commodity charts, but to really understand what the data is telling you and then to articulate that story to others in a clear, beautiful and engaging way.

“In this sense companies and governments have a lot to learn from journalism, where Flourish has its roots.”

Saul Klein, general partner at LocalGlobe, said: “The need to understand data and communicate it effectively is getting greater by the day. […] We think the power and simplicity of Flourish has huge potential and we’re thrilled to lead their seed round alongside our good friends at Founder Collective.”
