Government issues 25,000th Start Up loan to wedding start-up George James Bridal

Scheme led by James Caan has now awarded a total of £130m to new businesses across the UK

The 25,000th Start Up Loan has been awarded to wedding business George James Bridal, bringing the government-backed scheme’s total lending to £130m and total jobs created to 32,000.

Launched in May 2012 by Lord Young with James Caan as chairman, the Start Up Loans company provides UK-based entrepreneurs with loans of up to £10,000 and mentoring to help set up their own business.

Entrepreneur Nicola Weeks’ Bedford-based George James Bridal is a bridal boutique stocking dresses from some of the world’s leading designers, and offering a hassle free customer focused experience.

Weeks said of the loan: “I received my Start Up Loan through Foundation East and found the process very efficient and straightforward. The help I received from my mentor was absolutely brilliant. I’m so delighted to achieve my dream of running my own boutique and I’m honoured to be the 25,000th new business started by the scheme.”

Caan commented: “The creation of 25,000 new businesses is a significant achievement and everyone involved – the government, the Start Up Loans Company, and the loan recipients themselves, should be immensely proud.”
