Healthy food business: Cauli Rice

Britons have been going crazy for courgetti and now there’s a new faux carbohydrate kid on the block: cauliflower rice…

Mission statement: Cauliflower rice, made easy #ReplaceRice
One-line elevator pitch: Gluten-free, preservative-free, vegan ready-to-eat cauliflower rice
Stocked with: ASDA, Tesco, Wholefoods, Waitrose, Muscle Foods, Healthy Supplies

The story

With successful health food business Righteous already under their belt, husband-and-wife duo Gem Misa and Jamie Harris are onto their second venture Cauli Rice; a healthier rice alternative. Up to 75% fewer calories than rice and ready in under three minutes, the duo’s cauliflower rice brand launched in September 2015 and is available in four flavours; original, lemongrass and chilli, Mediterranean, and pilau. Vegan, gluten-free, long-life, and full of fibre, Misa and Harris envision that their microwaveable product will follow in the footsteps of the courgetti trend as demand for “faux carbohydrates” grows. Why Cauli Rice makes our list:

Innovative, healthy and backed by over £1m in crowdfunding, Cauli Rice has all the ingredients to become a major food business. Recently named a UK ‘Export Food pioneer’ by secretary of state Liz Truss for its “incredible export potential”, the business also counts Sir Richard Branson as a fan. Virgin mogul Branson recognised Cauli Rice as a finalist at Pitch to Rich 2015 and awarded Cauli Rice as one of Britain’s hottest food businesses at the recent Foodpreneur Fest.

What the critics say:

“Cauli Rice sachets take the legwork out of prep, which normally involves grating florets and sautéing or boiling. And with a third of the calories of regular white rice, it’s a healthier substitute.” – Hello! Magazine
