Tell us what your business does:
HR Consultants Marketing School helps HR business owners to master their marketing to attract new clients and grow their operations. I provide easy-to-digest learning modules in a monthly programme that cover topics like email campaigns, social media, blogging, websites, and more. I’ll also shortly be adding one-off courses into the mix.
Where did the idea for your business come from?
For the past two years, I’ve run a copywriting business serving HR and recruitment businesses. Over time, it became really clear that these clients needed help not only with their content in terms of websites and brochures, but with the marketing process as whole.
HR Consultants Marketing School is the perfect solution to the problem – it tells HR business owners what they need to know about marketing, and the tools they need to get ahead.
How did you know there was a market for it?
My client base for my copywriting business included a number of potential clients for my new venture, so I started out by talking to them on a one-to-one basis, and the unanimous opinion was that marketing coaching that was tailored for their industry was something that they were very much interested in.
What were you doing before starting up?
I did a graduate training programme in HR straight out of university and went on to work in various senior roles in HR while studying for my MSc in human resource management. The corporate world never felt quite right for me, and so a few years ago I left it behind to set up on my own.
I’d always been passionate about writing and marketing, so the copywriting business geared up towards HR businesses felt like the obvious first step. From here, I discovered the idea for HR Consultants Marketing School. It’s all felt like a natural progression, building on my previous experiences and learnings.
Have you always wanted to run your own business?
How did you raise the money?
I funded the set up through the profits from my copywriting business, though I did keep my start-up costs relatively low. I created my own website with a little help from a designer and a virtual assistant, and then I was ready to start putting my messages out there. Because I got really targeted on who my ideal client was and where I wanted to take the business, everything from there started to fall into place.
What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?
When you’re running a business on your own, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff that needs to be done and all the ideas that you have, especially when you’re getting started. I always make a point of returning to my business vision and taking the steps that will most help me to get to that point. I also outsource wherever I can.
Describe your business model and how you make money:
My primary offering is HR Business Owners Academy, a monthly membership club that offers HR business owners a masterclass webinar on a key marketing topic, a group Q&A call, cheat sheets and workbooks, and access to a private Facebook group for networking, brainstorming, and accountability. I’ll shortly be launching one-off courses that give a deeper insight into specific topics.
What was your first big breakthrough?
Probably getting the very first member signing up for the Academy! It happened very shortly after setting the business up, and that was a big indicator to me that I was on the right track.
What advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?
Get your stuff done and get it out there in front of your target audience. If you wait until you feel that everything is 100% perfect, you’ll never launch anything. Make changes as you go and keep moving forward.
Where do you want to be in five years’ time?
I hope that HR Consultants Marketing School will be seen as the go-to resource for HR business owners who want to take their operations to the next level.
