James Caan unveils accelerator for eco-entrepreneurs

Scheme includes £1m funding opportunities for start-ups

Former Dragons’ Den star James Caan will launch a new accelerator programme today, aimed specifically at ethical entrepreneurs.

The Berti Green Accelerator, which is supported by Caan’s Hamilton Bradshaw Impact Partners (HBIP), will select the UK’s three most innovative low-carbon start-ups.

The finalists will receive six months of business support from HBIP, as well as the opportunity to receive up to £1m in funding from Berti Investments.

The initiative is inspired by the philosophy that green businesses can drive growth which benefits profit, people and planet – and that significant start-up opportunities lie ahead as the UK seeks to meet its 2020 carbon reduction targets.

Applications for the Accelerator programme are open until April 17, after which shortlisted candidates will be invited to pitch to a Dragons’ Den style panel including Caan, Solarcentury founder Jeremy Leggett and Michael Liebreich of Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

Successful applicants will need to demonstrate evidence of their business’ growth potential, and outline their plans to tackle climate change by sustainably reducing carbon emissions.

Caan said: “The ‘impact investing’ market place is growing, but many entrepreneurs struggle to become investment ready due to lack of experience or knowledge…such as financial or operational know-how.

“The Berti Green Accelerator programme tackles this by blending bespoke business support with access to capital.”

Leggett added: “The UK needs fast-growing, domestic, renewable energy businesses more than ever.

“Programmes like the Berti Green Accelerator, that provide investment and support for cleantech businesses, are vital for encouraging growth and stimulating this sector.”
