Javoo is a mobile app which provides the first online global community for Alzheimer’s fighters, supporters and carers to connect with each other, share their experiences and inspire each other with the strength they need in the battle against the disease.

The app is a global social network, whereby people affected can interact with an open, friendly and supportive community, freely share their experiences and inspire others with the strength they need to combat it.

With the platform’s unique chat feature, users can connect and talk to fellow Alzheimer’s fighters, supporters and carers within their local area, enabling people to arrange physical meet-ups and build relationships outside of Javoo’s digital community.

The best feature of the app is its unique, 24/7 support service. Whether users are feeling lonely, sad or just need someone to talk to, they can use Javoo to chat privately in real-time with experienced and knowledgeable carers who can offer advice and answer their questions at any time of the day or night.

In addition to providing on-demand help and information, Javoo has a curated news feed that keeps its global user base updated with all of the latest news on how the scientific community is fighting the disease.

Where did the idea for your business come from?

Our grandfather suffered from Alzheimer’s. We found a serious lack of technological support and resource to help those dealing with the disease, and often struggled to get support and advice quickly, and speak to a network of people going through a similar experience.

During the later stages of his illness, when he could no longer familiarise himself with his family, our grandfather broke into an opera song. He used to be singer, and our family were shocked that he still knew the words, so we recorded a video.

We realised we had nowhere centralised to store the video, so decided to build an application to store it. The idea developed into the company you see today – a global, social network which provides support for those living with and affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

How did you know there was a market for it?

There are currently over 44m people living with the disease worldwide, which impacts over 500m lives. There is a clear market who could potentially benefit from a global community such as Javoo.

Carers, families and friends of those living with the disease can use Javoo to capture and share videos and pictures of a loved one.

These memories can be used to spark conversations with Alzheimer’s fighters and help trigger their memories, as well as keeping the whole family informed with ease, wherever they are in the world.

What were you doing before starting up?

Alongside starting Javoo, I (co-founder Scott) completed a Masters (MSc) in Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Management at the University of Nottingham. This gave us the tools and knowledge to bring our business idea for Javoo to life.

I founded the app with my brother Sam, who left his previous career to pursue his dream to further advance Alzheimer’s care.

Have you always wanted to run your own business?

My brother Sam and I have always wanted to run our own business, and are inspired by businesses that have changed the world for the better.

Our grandfather’s passing gave us the motivation to take matters into our own hands and build a product that will have a positive impact on the lives of other people affected by Alzheimer’s.

How did you raise the money?

So far, we have received funding from angel investors and are currently in the process of a new investment round to further develop our technology.

Describe your business model and how you make money:

At the moment we are a pre-revenue start-up focussed on creating a strong product and great user experience.

What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?

The most challenging part about starting Javoo was having the confidence to develop and finally launch the app. As a matter so close to our hearts, it was both mentally and physically challenging. It took a huge leap of faith for us to finally launch the product to the public in March 2016 but it’s been worth it!

We’ve been completely overwhelmed by the support and encouragement we’ve received from our customer base so far.

What was your first big breakthrough?

Our breakthrough moment was when Morella Kayman MBE, co-founder of the Alzheimer’s Society acknowledged the credibility and promising future of the technology we believe we have created. It was amazing to receive confirmation that what we are doing can really make a difference to people’s lives, and further develop health care technology for the better.

What advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?

Getting a business of the ground can be an all-consuming experience, so it’s important that you are doing it for the right reasons.

Chase your passion and find a problem that you actually WANT to solve. Identify the need, test the market and listen to your customers’ feedback. This is absolutely vital in order to build a successful product that gives your customers a great user experience

Where do you want to be in five years’ time?

Over the next few years, we want to become part of the everyday lives of carers and people living with or affected by the Alzheimer’s. We hope to keep adapting and innovating our technology until we reach that point, whilst creating a sustainable and profitable business.
