London “best city in Europe for digital entrepreneurs”

London is the best city in Europe for digital start-ups, but Stockholm is “snapping at its heels”, according to a new report compiled by the Nesta and the European Digital Forum.

An analysis of 28 EU capital cities, the European Digital City Index weighted the cities on scores for 10 core themes including mentoring, business environment, digital infrastructure, and managerial assistance.

The measures in the Index also took into account business funding and crowdfunding, entrepreneurial education and training, and culture and recreation popularity.

The capital ranked highest for its access to capital, “vibrant” entrepreneurial culture, and access to a skilled workforce – 20 UK cities featured in the ranking and six cities scored in the top 20. Alongside London, Cambridge, Bristol, Oxford, Manchester and Edinburgh feature in the rankings.

While London is said to have the best environment to start and grow a digital business, the report placed Stockholm in second place followed by Amsterdam, Helsinki, Paris and Berlin.

Chris Haley, Nesta’s head of startup and new technology research at Nesta, said:

“Government must continue to invest in digital skills and digital infrastructure, as well as addressing the cost of office space, if it is to continue to attract the next Deliveroo or FundingCircle, with many competitor cities in Europe, China and the US working hard to attract young firms.

“Of course, it also remains to be seen how a ‘hard Brexit’ will impact on the UK’s business allure for digital startups, given that access to markets is also hugely important.”
