London start-up accelerator Wayra Academy launches search for “The Big Energy Idea”

Telefonica and Centrica-backed initiative to offer businesses free office space, potential £50,000 and mentoring

Digital and technology entrepreneurs with business ideas which “innovate the energy space” are being offered the chance to join leading London tech accelerator Wayra Academy, as part of its “Big Energy Idea” competition.

Supported by Centrica plc and Telefonica, the energy initiative will award the three “best” social impact ideas with a potential £50,000 investment from Ignite Social Enterprise LP, access to mentors and Centrica and Telefonica’s client portfolio, and free space within the Wayra Academy.

Entrepreneurs have until February 28 to apply, following which each digital project will be reviewed through a selection process.

If your business isn’t digital, but focuses on energy and creates a social impact, you may still be eligible for the scheme as there are seven non-Wayra Academy places available, which will be granted support from Centrica and potential investment from Ignite.

Founded in 2011 by European telecoms giant O2/Telefonica, Wayra has become one of Europe’s leading accelerators, receiving around 20,000 applications and financing over 315 early-stage businesses.
