Europe’s 25 Corporate Startup Stars winner is bringing fresh ideas to the retail industry

The wholesale company METRO runs a number of innovative schemes to bring start-ups into its business. For example, Innovation in Retail meetups give early-stage companies the opportunity to present ideas and make connections. And the organisation’s foodtech accelerator helps one of METROs main customer groups – restaurant owners, caterers and hoteliers – to digitalise.

Particularly impressive is METRO’s collaboration with the Berlin start-up INFARM, which is piloting growing herbs and vegetables in METRO stores. Hydroponics enables customers to buy the freshest goods, without pesticides, in a way that avoids transportation costs and helps protect the environment.
