Tell us what your business does:

Mothers Medicines is an online business specialising in gifts for mums. We offer private label wine and chocolates which are our signature gifts right through to our luxury hamper which includes the above and also beautiful pyjamas, exclusive bath fizzes and more.

Where did the idea for your business come from?

The idea came from my son who was 12 at the time who thought I should open somewhere mums could go and relax with friends and a glass of wine – mother’s medicine! The concept developed from there and was added to with the chocolates etc. and our own private label and logo which was in fact designed by my daughter, so a family affair.

How did you know there was a market for it?

We completed market research but as two mums with five children between us and  many mum friends who without exception all frequently ask, is it ”wine o’clock”, we have no doubt there is a market there. We have put a modern twist on a traditional gift and most mums thoroughly enjoy receiving a nice bottle of wine and chocolates and this takes the generic and makes it personal.

What were you doing before starting up?

I was a stay at home mum to my three children but when my daughter left for university I knew it was time to ”get back on the horse again” and that time will pass quickly and my boys will be off to university too and I need to have something in place for when that happens.

Have you always wanted to run your own business?

I have run my own business before and vowed I wouldn’t do it again because of the hours that are demanded and the stress and the risks. The list is endless and yet here I am again!

How did you raise the money?

We didn’t need a huge amount of capital and we raised it through family and our own savings.

What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?

Our greatest challenge by far is getting Google to notice us, to become visible, to market ourselves and our brand. In all honesty, we have not yet overcome these challenges and are still working on them.

How much do you charge?

Our prices range from £10 for a box of chocolates to £20 for a bottle of fine wine and going up to £70 for luxury gifts.

What was your first big breakthrough?

Our first sale had us both literally jumping for joy and then receiving such great feedback was an incredible feeling. It was only for £30 but we didn’t care we felt that we had arrived!

What advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?

I would say starting a business these days is not for the faint-hearted and you really have to be prepared to work all hours, not sleep because of worry and fear, work for nothing as long as necessary and never ever lose faith in yourself or your product and remember that success is just the other side of failure. Don’t give up!

Where do you want to be in five years’ time?

I would like to believe Mothers Medicine will become a well-known brand especially among mums and those looking for gifts for her. I also hope that we will be amongst the people speaking at expos about our success story.
