Much Better Adventures secures £400,000 for new activity holidays

2015 Startups Awards finalist has won backing from Seedcamp, Boris Johnson's fund, and names behind Streetcar and Wahanda

London-based travel company Much Better Adventures, a finalist at the Startups Awards 2015, has raised £400,000 funding in a round led by pre-seed and seed fund Seedcamp.

Boris Johnson’s  London Co-investment Fund also participated in the round alongside Streetcar and LOVESPACE founder Brett Akker, Wahanda (now Treatwell) CTO Simon Lambert, ex-Google executive James Kent, and Fredrik Ahlberg; former VP of social at Candy Crush creator King.

Launched in May 2012 by Sam Bruce, Guy Bowden, and Alex Narracott, Startups 100-listed Much Better Adventures offers tailor-made activity holidays from specially selected local and independent holiday providers and takes a commission on every booking.

The company claims that 50,000 nights have been booked through the platform since launch, with customers able to book more than 2,000 ski and cycling holidays across 50 European destinations as of February 2016.

It is using the finance to launch a specialist marketplace for road cycling holidays, with plans for full global coverage in cycling and skiing by the end of the year and an eventual launch into trekking, surfing and diving.

Discussing the launch into cycling holidays, Bruce commented:

“It’s a multi-billion pound market with over 25 million overnight trips taken each year in the EU alone, but much like most of the active holiday industry, it’s incredibly fragmented and poorly served by existing online platforms.”

Mayor of London, Johnson, added: “I am delighted that the London Co-Investment Fund is helping companies like Much Better Adventures to make their ideas a reality and deliver jobs and growth for the capital.”
