New study reveals UK’s most active tech VCs

North West Fund and Index Ventures identified as most prolific backers

New data released today by CB Insights has identified the most prolific tech investors in the UK, with the North West Fund and Index Ventures leading the list of active firms.

The study, which examined the most active tech venture capital investors in the five-year period since 2009, identified the North West Fund as the most active in terms of investment in UK-based tech companies.

The evergreen investment fund has made the majority of its investments in the North West of England through its biomedical, digital and creative, energy and environments, and other investments divisions. The majority of deals were in early-stage start-ups.

London-based tech investor Index Ventures and US tech firm Accel Partners rounded out the top 3, with Accel’s latest investment a $65m backing of leading peer-to-peer loans site Funding Circle.

Index Ventures was identified as a prolific backer across all types of investments, with the firm coming in at first and second position for mid-market and early-stage investments respectively.

Newcastle-based seed investor Northstar Ventures was also identified as a particularly active early-stage backer, coming in at third on the early-stage ranking.

The study found nine out of 10 most active early-stage tech backers were UK-based, a trend CB Insights attributed to VC firms’ insistence on the importance of local presence.
