Northstar Ventures invests in indie film production company

Investment fund sees finance made available to creative industries

The North East Creative Content Fund has completed a £50,000 investment in Bridge + Tunnel Productions, an independent film production company.

It is thought that the money will enable Bridge + Tunnel, which launched in 1998, to complete and distribute its latest film titled I am Nasrine – a love story centring on an Iranian girl in Newcastle, which has been endorsed by Oscar winning actor Sir Ben Kingsley.

Film-maker Tina Gharavi, who has been developing I am Nasrine for the last eight years, shot much of the film in Iran, and she said that the crew and actors “put their lives at risk” to get it made.

She added that the Creative Content Fund injection will help Bridge + Tunnel “deliver this important vision that so many people have been part of”.

The injection of cash into Bridge + Tunnel is the latest in a series of investments for the Creative Content Fund, which was born out of a partnership between Northstar Ventures and Northern Film & Media, and is worth a total of £2.4m.

The fund, which is backed by the European Regional Development Fund and One North East. the first UK investment venture specifically set up for regional creative industries.

The £2.4m partnership fund, which is, sees Northern Film & Media and Northstar Ventures work in partnership to offer finance to creative firms.

Speaking about the latest investment, Michelle Cooper of Northstar said that I am Nasrine has the potential to achieve commercial success and that the film signified “an incredibly important cultural asset for this region, and we were delighted to fund the completion of the project.”

Meanwhile, Agnes Wilkie, creative director at Northern Film & Media added: “Adding investment to a powerful script, celebrity endorsement and cross-platform offering will help I Am Nasrine to both educate and entertain global audiences on important social issues.”
