Healthtech start-up OurPath raises £500,000

Programme that helps people with pre-diabetes avoid developing type 2 set to trial with the NHS in North London with a view to rolling out nationally

OurPath, a health technology start-up that helps people to lessen the symptoms of type 2 diabetes, has secured more than £500,000 from 500 Startups, Bethnal Green Ventures and a group of private angels.

Founded by Mike Gibbs and Chris Edson after they saw the personal impact of type 2 diabetes, as well as its estimated £9bn annual cost to the NHS, London-based OurPath sends customers an activity tracker and wireless scales, and appoints them a mentor to guide them through lifestyle changes over a six-week programme.

Costing £149 in total, the programme makes diet recommendations, sets achievable goals and keeps the user motivated in an effort to help prevent the one in three people in the UK with pre-diabetes developing type 2 diabetes.

OurPath claims its methods have helped users lose an average of 5.3kg and resulted in a 50% reduction in risk of type 2 diabetes. The programme is set to be trialled across GP practices in North West London this month and could be adopted by the NHS in other parts of the country if successful.

Eventually, the company has its sights set on the international market.
