Over 200 firms honoured with Queen’s Award

Entrepreneurial companies recognised for contribution to international trade, innovation and sustainable development

More than 200 companies have been honoured in the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, which are designed to recognise the outstanding achievements of British businesses.

This year’s awards recognised a total of 209 companies, with 151 winning specific awards for international trade. A further 50 of the winnersreceived awards for innovation, while eight received awards for sustainable development.

Business and enterprise minister Mark Prisk said: “The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the highest accolade a business can receive. The standard of this year’s winners highlights the great work taking place by businesses of all sizes to help boost the growth of the UK economy.

“I hope that it will inspire more entrepreneurs to start or grow their business as we look to make 2012 the year of enterprise.”

The winners included Sussex-based online training firm Mind Tools, which received a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in recognition of its achievement in building a website used by 15 million people across 129 countries.

James Manktelow, founder and CEO of MindTools.com, said: “We’re in the business of helping other people achieve excellence in whatever they do – so to be honoured for our own business excellence is particularly satisfying.

“We have no doubt that our Queen’s Award will give the business a tremendous boost both here and overseas. We have fantastic team of people here at Mind Tools, and this is really great recognition for everyone’s hard work.”   Meanwhile Gripple, a company which has developed a unique joining and tensioning tool for wire manufacture, claimed a Queen’s Award for Innovation – the fourth time it has been honoured.

Gripple is now one of an elite band of businesses which have secured awards in each of the three principal categories. Managing director Mark Edmonds said:

“This is undoubtedly a momentous year not only for the country but also for Gripple! Because the company will always invest in innovation it will continue to expand globally.

“We are particularly proud that Gripple has been recognised in a way which means so much to the company and its hard-working staff.”
