The original ‘Papa’, John Schnatter, founder and CEO of Papa John’s has a story that is an inspiration to all franchisees. At high school, he worked as a dishwasher at Rocky’s sub pub in Jefferson, Indiana, later selling his prized car to fund used restaurant equipment to make and sell his own pizza from a converted broom closet in his father’s tavern. Papa John’s is now the world’s third largest pizza chain. Papa John’s is the only branded pizza chain to deliver pizzas using only 100% fresh dough, giving a better natural flavour and our unique tomato sauce is made from the best Californian tomatoes, picked and packed from vine to can in just six hours.

What’s the business model?

Papa John’s franchisees manage a pizza delivery store, each employing between 15-20 staff. Many franchisees go-on to

manage multiple outlets. The company’s focus is on delivering quality pizza and excellent customer service every time.

Why did you decide it was the right one for you?

I believe in the Papa John’s brand and I love the pizza, the taste just can’t be beaten. I know the brand is well-known and rapidly growing in the UK and I wanted a ‘pizza the action’!

How popular is the franchise already and how long has it existed?

Papa John’s was founded in the USA in 1984 and there are now more than 200 franchised pizza delivery stores across the UK, and around 4,000 outlets in 33 countries. The Papa John’s brand is really popular because the product is so good. It was recently awarded the Pizza, Pasta and Italian Food Association ‘Pizza Delivery Chain Award’ – which it has won five out of the last nine years!

What were you doing before buying the franchise?

I ran and still operate a video production company, but I was looking for a new opportunity to grow and Papa John’s was the perfect choice. It also offers opportunities to own multiple outlets in the future if that is the direction I choose to go in.

Why did franchising appeal to you?

Having run my own business, I know setting up alone takes time. However, by buying into a reputable franchise it is possible to get up and running and ‘delivering the dough’ quickly!

How much did it cost?

Total investment in a Papa John’s franchise is in the region of £185,000 and this is made up of: franchise fee £18,500, legal fees £15,000, marketing £20,000, equipment £58,000 and construction from £73,000.

What challenges do you have in establishing the franchise in your region?

Papa John’s already has outlets in Bournemouth and Christchurch and so Poole is the ideal location. Our main challenge over the coming months will be to serve up the best quality pizza available and encourage repeat business from our valued customers. This will require hard work and dedication from all our staff.

What advice would you give to others looking at franchising?

I would advise researching potential franchisors in detail. It is really important to go for an established and popular brand and then to a large extent marketing your offering is made so much easier for you, if there is already a good level of awareness.
