Peter Jones CBE awards 19 year-old video marketer ‘National Entrepreneur of the Year’

Student entrepreneur recognised at Peter Jones Enterprise Academy graduation ceremony with £5,000 investment

A 19 year-old student running an online video marketing business has been granted the accolade of ‘National Entrepreneur of the Year’ at the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy graduation ceremony held at the Freemason’s Hall in Covent Garden yesterday.

David Humpston, founder of Viewpoint Video which offers “experiential” high definition (HD) videos for leisure venues, beat five finalists to win the £5,000 seed funding prize after pitching his business model to a panel of judges; including Seven Hills and StartUp Britain co-founder Michael Hayman, Jessops CCO Neil Old, Peter Jones Foundation chief executive Alice Barnard, and Jones himself.

Chosen for his “competitive spirit and experience” and for having an “impressive” track record with current clients, Amersham & Wycombe College student Humpston will now take over from 2013 winner Harry Day  as ‘Academy Ambassador’ over the coming year.

Young food entrepreneur Sonya Kumar, a fellow finalist who pitched for investment, was also awarded as ‘Highly Commended’ for her business Svadish Organic; a catering service providing healthy Indian cuisine.

The Academy, which has been running since 2009, looks to encourage ‘learning by doing’ with a range of enterprise and entrepreneurship courses. At the end of each academic year it holds a graduation to celebrate the achievements of its students.

This year’s ceremony, hosted by Hayman, began with Jones entering to the crowd cheering ‘Peter Jones’ and saw testimonials from family members of the students graduating as well as congratulation messages from several high-profile celebrities including Robbie Williams, Keith Lemon, and Emma Bunton, via video message.

Selected from Enterprise Academy colleges across the UK, the 2014 Peter Jones Enterprise Academy Award winners are as follows:
