Tell us what your business does:

Pooch Pack is a monthly subscription box of dog goodies. Every month, we send your pooch a box filled with dog treats and toys and even grooming products.

Where did the idea for your business come from?

Inspired by all the beauty boxes on the market, I wanted to create a monthly box service for something different. I sat down and made a huge list and then started to do some research.

How did you know there was a market for it?

Other than asking friends and family, I did a lot of research online including a survey on a pet forum. What were you doing before starting up? I was (and still am) running my inbound marketing company TG3M.

Have you always wanted to run your own business?

How did you raise the money?

The business is entirely bootstrapped.

What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?

The main challenge is getting the word out about the brand while keeping a very close eye on the budget. Social media has been fantastic in helping me build relationships with customers, suppliers and other small business owners.

Describe your business model and how you make money:

Customers pay for a box of products every month through a recurring charge on their cards. We make money by negotiating special pricing with suppliers in order to feature in the box. We are also adding an exclusive member only shop where our customers can receive discounts on additional purchases. What was your first big breakthrough? Winning the #WOW award from Jacqueline Gold in January. This is a weekly Twitter award from Jacqueline Gold for women who tweet her about their business. She selects three businesses to support and retweet every week from the close to thousand that she receives and we won. We gained several new customers and much needed exposure.

What advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs?

Test, test, test. You won’t know if a marketing channel, a headline or even the layout of your website will work for your business unless you test. Keep the tests small at first and keep an eye on your budget.

Where do you want to be in five years’ time?

I want Pooch Pack to be a recognisable brand for delivering new, exciting products direct to the consumer before they hit the popular pet stores. We also donate a portion of our sales to dog charities so we want to make a significant impact with our charitable work over the years.
