Product idea #16: Tropic Skincare
Backed by Lord Sugar, this natural skincare brand has won over the beauty industry with a wealth of fans and accolades, including a Startups Awards win
Founder: Susan Ma
Date launched: November 2011
The product: Natural, vegan and cruelty-free beauty products
In 2015, Tropic Skincare took home the coveted title of Product Business of the Year at the Startups Awards.
Fast forward to 2017, and the natural beauty brand has demonstrated exactly why it was a worthy winner; now generating millions in revenue with a community of over 5,000 ambassadors.
Former BBC Apprentice star Susan Ma launched the brand in 2011 – five years after initially coming up with the business idea and selling samples at Greenwich Market – ignited by investment from Lord Sugar who gave his backing following Ma’s appearance on the show.
So, what makes Tropic Skincare a great product business?
A range of all-natural, cruelty-free and vegan skincare, Surrey-based Tropic Skincare is a Made in Britain brand inspired by the tropical plants of Ma’s former home in Cairns, Australia and has support from the Vegan Society, PETA, and Cruelty Free International.
Unlike the traditional retail model, Tropic Skincare’s 70 product range – which covers everything from tanning lotions to hand creams – retails via an army of loyal supporters using the social selling model. Its ‘hostesses’, which run pamper parties, and ‘ambassadors’ act as champions for the brand’ and have helped Tropic Skincare achieve monthly sales in excess of £1m.
With clear founding principles, including the use of pure ingredients, honest labelling, and in-house manufacture and production, the range has attracted rave reviews from happy customers. Testimonials from users even claim the skincare products can quickly rid coldsores and clear up eczema and other skin irritations.
Boasting more than 55,000 fans across social media, a recent feature in the Sunday Times‘ Fast Track 100, and exceptional financials, Tropic Skincare is rapidly achieving its mission of “empowering beauty” across the country – making it a great product business to watch!
