Robotics business Q-Bot secures £1.5m to “revolutionise” construction

The business aims to roll out SprayBot, a robot which can install home insulation where human builders can’t, across the UK and overseas

Q-Bot, a company which develops innovative robots for the construction sector, has closed a £450,000 funding round supported by ClearlySo, Minerva Investors Group, Curious Capital, London Business Angels and Chicago Booth Angels.

Alongside this, the Wandsworth-based business has been co-funded with £1.05m from Horizon 2020, the EU Commission’s research and innovation programme, bringing the total raised to £1.5m.

Founded in 2012, Q-Bot aims to “revolutionise” the way workers construct, maintain and upgrade buildings by developing robotic tools which can operate in hard-to-reach or hazardous areas.

The company claims that its initial project, SprayBot, is “the first affordable and scalable solution” to the difficulties and expense involved in installing under-floor insulation in homes.

According to Q-Bot, the device is able to enter small spaces and create a 3D map of the surrounding area before applying insulation. The bot then “inspects” its work to ensure that it has been completed satisfactorily.

With this product, which was developed to make homes energy-efficient with less disruption and cost to residents, Q-Bot has attracted a range of housing sector clients including Camden Council, Cardiff City Council, CityWest Homes, Islington Council and Peabody.

The funding will be used to roll out SprayBot across the UK, which has an estimated 10 million homes in need of under-floor insulation. The business also hopes to tap into markets in France and the US, where it has conducted trials.

Matthew Holloway, CEO and co-founder at Q-Bot, commented:

“The support of our investors combined with co-funding from the EU Commission’s H2020 programme has enabled Q-Bot to secure the accreditation critical to our customers and partners including a BBA Agrément Certificate and CE Mark.

“Q-Bot has already created dozens of jobs and insulated hundreds of homes, but our goal is to have an impact on a global scale, by transforming the construction industry with smarter solutions.”
