Santander launches bank service for ambitious UK businesses

Breakthrough initiative will look to support fast-growth firms to hire talent, trade overseas and foster new connections

Santander has launched a new banking service targeted at Britain’s “most ambitious” businesses; a market which it claims is currently under served.

Announced at Santander’s SME Summit on Wednesday, the service will be facilitated through the bank’s Breakthrough programme and intends to support businesses with access to knowledge, talent, connections, funding and advice for trading overseas.

The launch forms follows recent research conducted by its commercial team which found that 36% of UK small and medium firms which describe themselves as ‘highly ambitious’ are more likely to grow.

It forms part of the bank’s plans to double its current small and medium enterprise share to 10% by the end of 2016 and comes as the bank celebrates winning the award for ‘Best Business Current Account Provider’ at the annual Business Moneyfacts Awards, along with the title of ‘Business Bank of the Year’.

Santander Corporate & Commercials’ head of SME, Marcelino Castrillo, said: “Ambitious small and medium enterprise are the beating heart of the UK economy – they are more likely to expand, innovate and trade across borders.

“By creating a distinctive, unique and innovative programme, tailored to the needs of ambitious small and medium enterprises, we are confident that we will become the bank of choice for ambitious small and mid-sized firms”.
