Small firms urged to bid for public sector contracts

Now is ideal time to win government contracts, small firms told

With tenders beginning to be issued for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, small businesses have been told that now is an ideal time to bid for public sector contracts.

According to learndirect business, lucrative opportunities are now up for grabs from the public sector, which spends roughly £150bn on goods and services a year.

Local government alone spends roughly £25bn every year on goods and services, over half of which is with small and medium-sized businesses and 14% is with micro businesses with 10 employees or less, learndirect said.

Learndirect added that the government has committed to broadening its supplier base, opening up the market to more small businesses and making it easier for them to bid for contracts. Justine Fosh, head of customer development at learndirect business, commented:

“The revenue pot is huge and across every business sector.

“With 59% of local government’s annual £25bn spend on goods and services in the UK allocated to small and medium-sized businesses, there has never been a better time to get a slice of the action.
